Amistad
According to José Ferreras Pagán in his 1902 book Biografía de las Riquezas de Puerto Rico, Hacienda Amistad was established ca. 1850 by the Pellicier family. He states it was acquired in 1887 by the Vivoni brothers who still owned it in 1902 when it consisted of one thousand six hundred cuerdas of which some four hundred were used to grow sugarcane producing some one thousand hogsheads of raw sugar.
The Vivoni brothers Ferreras Pagán refer to were Corsican immigrants from Sisco Pedro Santos Vivoni Battistini (1840-1903), Juan Colombano Vivoni Battistini (1843-1927) and Mateo Pascual Vivoni Battistini (1845- 1937). Pedro Santos was the first one to emigrate to Puerto Rico in 1856 followed by Juan Colombano in 1872 and Mateo Pascual in 1880. A few years after arriving in Puerto Rico Juan Colombano left for Venezuela, Panama and the Dominican Republic. He returned to Corsica ca. 1899 where he died in 1927. Mateo Pascual was a physician educated in Pisa and Napoli, after graduating in 1879 he established a private practice in San Germán and in 1887 partnered with Pedro Santos in the acquisition of Hacienda Amistad, he was also owner of Hacienda Unión in Lajas. In 1908 he returned to Corsica where he died in 1937 single and without any descendants.
Upon arrival in Puerto Rico in 1856 Pedro Santos established himself in San Germán at the residence of his uncle Santos Battistini. In 1860 he married Maria Concepción Ramirez de Arellano Ramirez de Arellano of Sabana Grande of which marriage eleven children were born. He was instrumental in the separation of Lajas from San Germán and its establishment as a separate municipality in 1883. Ferreras Pagán states that in 1902 he was owner of hacienda Resolución in Lajas which he acquired in 1875 from its founder ca. 1850 Antonio Pardo. Hacienda Resolución was located southwest of Lajas in Barrio Palmarejo and consisted of one thousand six hundred acres of which about four hundred were planted with sugarcane. In 1891 Pedro Santos also owned the one thousand four hundred twenty two acre Hacienda Fraternidad in Guanica. Per Humberto Garcia Muñiz in his book Sugar and Power in the Caribbean, on March 25, 1901 Fritz, Lundt & Co. leased the one thousand five hundred acre Hacienda Fraternidad of Pedro Santos Vivoni for a ten year period for a yearly sum of $9,000. A few days later on May 31, Fritz, Lundt & Co. assigned the lease to Santa Rita Estate, a subsidiary of the South Porto Rico Sugar Co. Between 1870 and 1890 Pedro Santos built a home in Sisco, after his third stint as mayor which he served until 1902, he returned to Corsica where he died in 1903.
Upon Pedro Santos death, his sons , José Antonio Vivoni Ramirez de Arellano (1867-1927), Pedro Tomás Vivoni Ramirez de Arellano (1873-1959) and Enrique Vivoni Ramirez de Arellano (1875-1967) managed the estate. Garcia Muñiz states in his book that in the early 1900s Pedro Santos son José Antonio Vivoni Ramirez de Arellano (1867-1927) managed both hacienda Amistad and Hacienda Resolución.
Hacienda Amistad, still in 2025 owned by the Vivoni family, is located 1.5 km west of PR-116 in Barrio Sabana Yegua of Lajas. It has been considered a central sugar mill by some, although its years operating with modern though used equipment, was limited to three or four.
